国际语言教育硕士专业提供英语授课的高级研究生教育，设有英语作为第二语言教学(TESL)和汉语作为第二语言教学(TCSL)两个专业方向，为有资格从事英语或汉语作为第二语言教学的学生提供学术基础。本课程旨在培养在应用语言学和语言教学研究方面有扎实基础的语言专业人士，为未来充满活力的全球职业生涯做准备。

Students enrolled into the MA in International Language Education program will have opportunity to pursue one of the two specialized concentrations: Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), and Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL). Students must declare the specialized concentrations they apply for at the time of application.(1) Double-specialization is not allowed.

Students of the program must take eight courses (24 credits). Of the eight courses, students are required to take three compulsory foundation courses (9 credits), and five elective courses (15 credits), including at least one course (3 credits) from general electives, and at least three courses (9 credits) from either Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) concentration. Credit transfer is not allowed. Students admitted to the dual degree program with University of Southern California (USC) may transfer up to 6 credits from USC to fulfill the program requirements with prior approval of the Academic Director(s).

Target Candidates

The target candidates for the program include but are not limited to:

graduates who already completed a relevant bachelor’s degree in the field of language, linguistics, language acquisition, and/or language teaching from a recognized institution;

in-service English- or Chinese-language instructors who wish to take a 1-year career break;

language curriculum developers, and other qualified language-related professionals.

Admission Requirements

Applicants should have obtained a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized university or equivalent.

English requirements for applicants whose first language is not English and whose degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English are as follows:

for Chinese (TCSL) Concentration applicants: IELTS ≥ 6.5 (all sub-scores ≥ 5.5), or TOEFL iBT ≥ 85

for English (TESL) Concentration applicants: IELTS ≥ 7.0 (Writing ≥ 7.0, and other sub-scores ≥ 5.5), or TOEFL iBT ≥ 100 (Writing ≥ 27/30)

Applicants to the TCSL concentration whose first language is not Chinese and whose degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not Chinese are required to fulfill the Chinese requirement of Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK by Hanban or the “New HSK”) level 5 or above. Applicants whose first language is Chinese or whose degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was Chinese, must demonstrate their Chinese proficiency by obtaining the National Putonghua Proficiency Test (PSC) Grade 2B or above.

L同学是山东大学日语专业的学生，均分85，本身对日语专业不是很感兴趣，所以想硕士申请的时候换别的专业，考虑到很多专业需要有专业背景才能申请，最终在综合了L同学的需求以及职业规划的基础上，我们选择了香港科技大学的中文教学专业。L同学大学期间就开始做家教兼职，积累了一些教学经验，同时为了更加匹配申请专业的要求，L同学参加了学校的社团，教授国外学生汉语，一方面让他们更好地融入中国的环境，另一方面也增加了自己中文教学的经历。另外这个专业还需要学生提供普通话证书，一般二级甲等。学生在提交申请两个月后，顺利拿到Offer.
