1. To nurture creative talents with contemporary research methodologies, in-depth professional knowledge and skills as well as cross-cultural and interdisciplinary awareness in diverse visual arts studio practices;
2. To locate students’ creative and academic practices in global and local socio-cultural contexts;
3. To enable students to develop their own creative profiles according to their research interests in a specific visual arts discipline (their declared concentration); and
4. To meet the growing demand for professional practitioners in the cultural and creative sectors in Hong Kong and beyond.

The Master of Arts in Visual Arts programme is offered with two concentrations:

1. Studio & Media Arts (SMA)
2. Craft & Design (CD)

The MA in Visual Arts programme structure consists of two types of courses with different emphases:

Required Courses

Students from both MA in Visual Arts concentrations will jointly attend the four Required Courses (3 units each), which include two theory-based courses—namely Research Methodology for the Visual Arts and Visual Arts Theory and Criticism—as well as two practice-based courses—namely Critically Engaged: Creative Practices in Context and Arts and the Public: Interpretation and Presentation. The Required Courses introduce common knowledge and skills for practitioners in different visual arts disciplines (the two concentrations on offer), as well as encourage interdisciplinary integration through collaborative group projects.

Concentration-based Courses

Two Concentration-based Courses (9 units each)—namely SMA/CD Studio Project I and SMA/CD Studio Project II—will be offered for each individual concentration, Studio and Media Arts (SMA) or Craft and Design (CD) in the two semesters of the full-time study mode and second year of the part-time study mode. In these two concentration-based courses, students continuously develop a self-directed project under tutorial supervision to investigate an identified issue/theme/creative approach in their respective creative practice. Students have to successfully complete the SMA/CD Studio Project I in order to progress to the SMA/CD Studio Project II.

Students’ continuous development in the two concentration-based courses will form the final creative project to be presented in the Graduation Exhibition. For SMA/CD Studio Project II, final project works should be appropriately set up in the exhibition venue for assessment before the opening of the Graduation Exhibition.

Requirements

I. Required Courses 12 units Research Methodology for the Visual Arts 3 units   Visual Arts Theory and Criticism 3 units   Critically Engaged: Creative Practices in Context 3 units Arts and the Public: Interpretation and Presentation 3 units      

II. Concentration-based Courses 18 units   One of the following concentrations:    Studio and Media Arts     SMA Studio Project IA 4.5 units  SMA Studio Project IB 4.5 units   SMA Studio Project IIA 4.5 units   SMA Studio Project IIB 4.5 units         Craft and Design   CD Studio Project IA 4.5 units   CD Studio Project IB 4.5 units CD Studio Project IIA 4.5 units CD Studio Project IIB 4.5 units    

Tuition Fee Local students: HK$120,000/programme;

Non-local students: HK$140,000/programme

Academic Qualification

1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or comparable institution; or
2. An equivalent qualification.

Language Proficiency RequirementApplicants are expected to communicate in English at an advanced level, meeting one or more of the following qualifications:

1. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification earned from an English-medium institution; or
2. A band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS; or
3. TOEFL scores of 79 (internet-based); or
4. CET-6 (College English Test band 6): 450.

Others

Applicants should have relevant experience in respective studio practice. A portfolio of past works (5-10 images of original artworks in digital format or photographs) has to be submitted with the application.

Applicants have to declare their intended concentration (SMA or CD) as well as to submit a study proposal for the SMA/CD Studio Project in the application process.

Graduate ProspectsGraduates from this programme can move into the professional sphere as visual artists, designers and/or artisans within the wider spectrum of the creative and cultural industries.

Graduates are also able to pursue further studies and research in Master of Philosophy and/or Doctor of Philosophy, at the Academy of Visual Arts.
