创意作品集要求:
THE CREATIVE PORTFOLIO
Please prepare the following items for your creative portfolio package:
1. VISUAL SUBMISSION 视觉作品集
Sample(s) of your work presented visually. Material done in collaboration with other artists is acceptable provided you were the major creative force (i.e., director, writer, camera operator or editor) and explain in detail the exact nature of your contribution.
Choose ONE of the following formats (i.e. do not combine video and photography):
Video: The submission should contain one complete narrative or documentary film with a total running time that does not exceed 15 minutes. Video footage of staged plays or theatre performances is not acceptable. Do not submit a clip reel. Please be clear about your specific contributions to the sample. You may upload up to ten minutes of video directly to the media page within SlideRoom. If the total running time of your video sample exceeds ten minutes, a YouTube or Vimeo link to your work must be provided on the media page. Please test your video prior to submission. If you are submitting a link, please be sure no downloads or passwords are required. We also ask that you do not deactivate viewer controls on this link. Reviewers will need to be able to fastforward, rewind, and see the video runtime. Foreign language films must have English subtitles.
OR
Photography (Stills): No more than 10 prints/images on any subject, black and white or color, with or without commentary may be submitted. The photographs may also be a presentation of work in other media, such as painting, illustration, sculpture, set design, costume design, etc. (Still images and scans uploaded to SlideRoom should be a minimum of 72 dpi.)
Please use the guidelines provided in SlideRoom when labeling your media (i.e. film or photographs).
2. VIDEO SELF-PORTRAIT 自我陈述
Upload a 1-2 minute self-portrait video where you show and tell us about yourself. Your video should be in your own voice and not a reiteration of why you want to be admitted to NYU's grad film program. Be yourself; what you choose to say and how you say it is up to you. We will not be judging the production value of this film; we encourage applicants to use cameras that are readily available to them (i.e. cell phones or computers). We are not looking for polished/edited videos; it is meant to be a short video where you tell us something about yourself that we cannot get from other aspects of your application.
3. WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS 命题剧本写作
You must submit ALL of the following:
Dramatic Story: The Dramatic Story is a required short narrative writing exercise. Write a two page story using one of the following themes:
a situation where honesty is an excuse for cruelty
a character whose jealousy can't be controlled
the perils of modesty
a proud character searching for forgiveness
a story that focuses on an act of betrayal
the condition of exile - any kind of exile: political or personal or both
the power of money
revenge
Format for the Dramatic Story: 2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, prose style (not screenplay). (Save as a pdf and upload to SlideRoom.)
Short Scene: Write a 2-page cinematic scene between two people that reveals something about the characters. You can give a one sentence description of each character, but please include only essential details. Do not write backstory but please incorporate behavior. Do not include a cover page. Write a maximum of two pages in screenplay format, 12 point font. (Save as a pdf and upload to SlideRoom.)
Concept: Describe one concept for a feature-length script, narrative film, or documentary that you would like to develop. Feel free to follow treatment or prose format. Write no more than one page, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font. (Save as a pdf and upload to SlideRoom.)
Resume & Statement of Purpose: Upload copies of your Resume and Statement of Purpose to SlideRoom. These are also required elements for the application submitted to the Tisch Office of Graduate Admissions. Your Statement of Purpose should provide information about who you are and why you're applying to the program. In what ways do you plan to contribute to the program and beyond? What are your academic and professional goals? Tell us how your experiences, successes, and failures have shaped how you see the world. We are also interested in knowing what kinds of stories you hope to tell. (3 pages maximum, double spaced, 12 point font).
Please upload the requested items only. Failure to do so will be grounds for automatic
Disqualification. Please do not substitute, vary, or add extraneous or additional pieces. Portfolio materials cannot be edited once uploaded to SlideRoom.
Do NOT wait until the last minute to submit your online graduate application and your portfolio in SlideRoom. We strongly recommend that you apply 2 weeks early to avoid technical issues that may arise.

Cinematic Arts Personal Statement (Must be uploaded in PDF format only)
The Cinematic Arts Personal Statement will be read by the admissions committee as a measure of creativity, self-awareness and vision. We are looking for a sense of you as a unique individual and how your distinctive experiences, identities, values, and/or views of the world have shaped who you are and what you want to say as a creative filmmaker. We want to know about the kind of stories you want to tell. Bear in mind that enthusiasm for watching films, descriptions of your favorite films and the involvement in the filmmaking process is common in most candidates.
As a result, we encourage that you focus on your individuality. Note that there is no standard format or correct answer. (500 words or less)
Writing Sample - Choose One (Must be uploaded in PDF format only)
A description of a four-minute film that contains no dialogue. It can be fiction or non-fiction. The story has to be communicated visually. (400 words or less)
A dialogue scene between two people in screenplay format. (400 words or less)
Creative Portfolio List (Must be uploaded in PDF format only)
The portfolio list is a written record of the applicant's creative materials. It should include a concise description of each project, the month and year the project was completed, the applicant's creative role and the purpose of the project. The material, which does not need to be film or television related, should give an idea of the range and depth of the applicant's creative ability. You may include links to previous film samples and photo essays. Formal recognition - such as awards, publications, jobs and exhibitions - should be noted. The name of the institution or publication should be included when listing creative materials prepared for a class or publication. An example of the portfolio list is below:
July 2023, A Day in the Life, digital video, 12 minutes. Position: writer/director. A documentary on a homeless Iraq vet who has lived on the streets since his return from the military. Created for senior-year multimedia term project, San Raphael High School, Miami, Florida.
March 2023, Doorways, a series of 5 black-and-white photographs. Position: photographer. "Second Prize Winner" in the Des Moines Sunday Journal photo contest.
February 2022, Cellomorphosis, short story. Position: writer. A variation on the novella by Franz Kafka; published in Writing, vol. IV, 2022, at Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts.
We're not looking for a specific number of projects, but rather a demonstrated commitment to creative work.
Creative Team Question (500 words or less)
Describe how you handled a difficult situation that you have faced with other people in your creative life.
Video Introduction
Submit a 30-60 second video of yourself speaking directly to the camera, in a single take with no edits, introducing yourself and explaining what will make attending SCA a successful experience for you and others.
Media Sample (Upload in Portfolio Section)
Submit a 2-minute short film based on the prompt: "A secret." Previous work cannot be used; you must create a film for this application.
Submissions can be any genre, narrative, documentary, or experimental. The reviewing committee is interested in seeing your storytelling ability. Creativity is what's important, not scale. We understand the time and production limitations. This exercise does not require large expenditures or a huge production; cell phones may be used for this project if desired. The project should be in English or be subtitled in English.
Applicants must perform at least 3 of the 6 jobs, which are: 1) Director, 2) Producer, 3) Writer, 4) Editor, 5) Sound Recording and Design, 6) Cinematography and Production Design.
(If you'd like to show us additional creative work, your Creative Portfolio section can include links to previous film samples.)
In addition: Please submit a critique of your film and a crew list (in PDF format only).
The critique should be brief, 150 words or less, and in the form of notes you would give the filmmakers as if you had not made the film yourself. We want to see your objectivity and ability for self-reflection.
The crew list should include the names of the crew members performing the 6 jobs outlined above.
Videos should be housed on a publicly viewable link and not password protected. Videos should be no more than 2 minutes maximum, with no more than 15 seconds of credits.

Creative Materials Required for Application
Three Letters of Recommendation
Online submission of letters of recommendation is required. Recommenders should be academic or professional contacts who can speak to your creative ability and potential; personal/friend references are not permitted. If you received a degree in the past 5 years, you must provide at least 1 academic reference from faculty at that institution. Once you save their contact information, they will be sent an email with instructions on how to upload your letter of recommendation.
Creative Materials vary by concentration. Please see below for a list for each concentration. All submitted creative materials must clearly bear the applicant's name, date of birth, name of concentration to which he or she is applying, and title of the material (dramatic writing sample, autobiographical essay, etc).
ALL applicants MUST submit the following in 12-point Courier font:
Autobiographical essay: Four to six double-spaced pages. (Tell us something about yourself and your background, artistic experiences, creative influences, and professional objectives.)
Dramatic Writing Sample: A log line must be included. No more than 10 pages. Must be in screenplay format and must contain dialogue. This can be a complete short screenplay or the first ten pages of a screenplay. It must be original; it may not be an adaptation, except of your own work in another form. Please do not submit writing in prose form and no theatre plays. The story cannot be the same as the one in your feature film treatment or your optional video submission.
Film prompt: Read the following openings, choose one and imagine the scene that might follow it. The scene you write must include both dialogue and description. It should be no less than two and no more than three pages long. It should be written in screenplay format. These prompts change every year. The prompts listed below correspond to the Fall 2024 application.
You may change the gender of any character in these prompts, but do not change ages or relationships.
EXT. BACKYARD - DAY
A YOUNG WOMAN hastily exits the house leaving the noise and chaos of the party behind her. Finally, alone, she allows herself to exhale, laugh, and slump down onto a patio chair. After a moment, she realizes she isn’t the only one out there.
EXT. STORE PARKING LOT - LATE AFTERNOON
A MAN stands in the parking lot of a shabby-looking grocery store. He wears a work apron beneath his winter jacket and he’s clearly on a break. Just about to light up a cigarette, he suddenly freezes. Peering ahead, he sees a BLACK LIMOUSINE coming toward him.
INT. KITCHEN - LATE NIGHT
TWO TEENAGERS sit at opposite ends of a kitchen table, occasionally glancing up at a wall clock. Just as the hands of the clock reach midnight, the two jump to their feet and head over to a window overlooking the yard.
Feature film treatment: On one double-spaced page for a film you might wish to write, direct or produce based on your application concentration(depending upon the concentration you will be applying to). The treatment must concisely relate a complete dramatic story sufficient to sustain a feature-length film, including major characters and plot developments and a clear statement of the resolution. The story cannot be the same as the one in your dramatic writing sample or your optional video submission. You must state the genre of your treatment and a log line. A log line is one or two sentences that describe the protagonist(s) and the story of the film.
Visual Submission (optional)
Film/Video Work: All Film MFA applicants may submit up to 30 minutes of film/video work.
It is advisable to put the best work at the beginning of your visual submission.
Visual Exercise: Applicants for Directing who have not shot prior visual material are encouraged to shoot and submit the following OPTIONAL VISUAL EXERCISE: Write and shoot a 2-person SILENT SCENE (no dialogue), between one and two minutes long, which deals with the idea of "COMING TOGETHER." It could be two strangers who make a connection, a fighting couple who then make amends, or two people who 'come together' in anger, physicality or any other dramatic situation you choose.
You may use subjects of any genders or ages, and any locations and props, etc. that you have available to you. Elaborate production expense is NOT the goal of this part of the application. You may shoot on any format.
Your visual submission should be uploaded to the Video Upload section of the online application and cannot be linked to a third-party such as YouTube or Vimeo.
Creative Producing applicants must ALSO submit a current resumé.
