REQUIREMRNT

Academic entry qualification

• Please note applicants to the Thornton School are only permitted to select one music program through the Common Application and it must be selected as the first-choice major. Applicants who would like to be considered for admission to a second Thornton program must submit a written request following the Second Major Request.

• Submit official transcripts and test scores to the USC Admission Office.

Standardized Tests

First-year application

• Minimum score of 600 on the SAT Critical Reading exam (previous SAT) or 650 on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing exam (redesigned SAT) or 27 on the ACT English exam; OR

• A minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL iBT (with a minimum score of 20 in each section); OR

• A minimum IELTS score of 7; OR

• A minimum PTE score of 68.

Transfer application

SAT or ACT (with the optional Writing test) Scores. Required from applicants who have completed fewer than 30 semester units of college coursework.

• A minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL iBT (with a minimum score of 20 in each section); OR

• A minimum IELTS score of 7; OR

• A minimum PTE score of 68.

Portfolio

Applicants to Classical Guitar must submit a video recording to be pre-screened by the faculty. The results of this pre-screen will determine whether an applicant will be invited to perform a live audition on the USC campus in Los Angeles. Pre-screen recordings must include video. Audio recordings will not be accepted.

The prescreen video should include the following for all degrees of application:

The submitted video recording must contain two pieces of contrasting character and those pieces must be from different style periods. Ideally, one piece should be composed before 1900 and the other should be composed after 1900. The video recording should be about 12 minutes long.
