Academic entry qualification
First-year application
You'll provide your high school courses and grades, choose your major and an alternative program, write an essay, and list your extracurricular activities, honors, and awards. You must complete a program of study that qualifies you for admission to selective universities in your own country. Freshman applicants can apply to Illinois in one of two ways: myIllini or Coalition. We don't give preference based on application type. Transfer applicants can only apply through myIllini.
Transfer application
You'll choose a major, write an essay, and list your extracurriculars, work experience, honors, and awards. We need official transcripts from all colleges or universities you've attended. We also need a final, official transcript from your high school or your official GED results to confirm you’ve graduated. When you apply, ask that these institutions send your official transcripts directly to our office. We ask that transfer students send us the following documents when they apply. Freshmen should only submit these documents once they've been admitted.

Senior high school transcript; Junior high school transcript; A-Level certificate (if taken) ; O-Level/GCSE/IGCSE certificates (if taken)
Hong Kong:
Transcript showing courses and grades for years 9 through 12 (Form III through Form VI); Form VI (we don't accept students after Form V); HKDSE exam certificate

Standardized Tests
First-year application
We accept the ACT or SAT I. You don't have to take the essay portion of the SAT and the writing portion of the ACT unless you're applying to a teaching licensure program. Official test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency in time to meet our deadlines. Score a minimum of 80 on the Internet-based (iBT) TOEFL. The Colleges of Business, Engineering, and Media require a minimum total score of 100 iBT. Score a minimum total of 6.5 on the IELTS, with a minimum score of 6 on all 4 modules. For Business, Engineering, and Media, the minimum total is 7.5, with a minimum score of 7 on all 4 modules.
Transfer application
Either ACT or SAT I scores are accepted. Official test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. You must meet one of the following conditions to satisfy our minimum English proficiency requirement.
It’s worth submitting all test scores showing a high level of English competency. These scores must be dated within 2 years of your enrollment at Illinois. Score a minimum of 80 on the Internet-based (iBT) TOEFL. The Colleges of Business, Engineering, and Media require a minimum total score of 100 iBT.
Score a minimum total of 6.5 on the IELTS, with a minimum score of 6 on all 4 modules. For Business, Engineering, and Media, the minimum total is 7.5, with a minimum score of 7 on all 4 modules.
Score high enough on the English section of the ACT, Critical Reading section of the pre-2016 SAT, or Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the redesigned SAT. We'll review these scores on an individual basis in lieu of TOEFL or IELTS scores to determine if you meet English proficiency. We encourage you to take the TOEFL or IELTS if you're concerned your ACT or SAT scores might not be high enough for admission.
